Hot Coffee

Coming out of my slumber, turning over, and seeing that dreaded alarm clock reminded me to wake up. The noise of it rattled me as if I never heard it before. I felt some kinship with the device, as its screech mimicked my feelings about that very moment.

Ugh.

As my feet touched the cold, wood floor, I looked towards the blinds. They were closed. Didn’t matter, in my drowsiness I stared at it anyway, looking for something, anything, that resembled hope.

Nothing came from it.

Predictable.

And from that feeling of hopeless, the day began.

What day? Didn’t matter. It was the same as the last. Most likely, the next day would resemble it as well.

I felt trapped. Fully human, but my path determined for me, much like a rail-gun arcade game at the movie theater. Well, here goes two quarters, in the form of coffee made in my bathrobe before my conscious brain even recognized the day.

In fact, I don’t think I would have noticed it unless the hot coffee didn’t slightly burn my tongue. Ugh, impetuous with nowhere to go, why am I like that anyway.

Indeed, nowhere to go but out into a cold world that didn’t care for me, anyway.

The Hidden Phone Update – It’s Working Out Well

Two weeks ago, I decided to hide my phone before bed.

So far, I’ve noticed:

  • A marginal increase in my “before bed” sleep quality.
  • Incentives work.
  • A massive increase in my post wake-up quality.

I thought that not having my phone around in the morning would just speed up my routine. Instead, my phone absence motivated me to do my work.

It’s improved my discipline when it came to morning habits.

Add Rules. They Can Help….

Make your bed every morning.

Make sure you do ten push ups.

Make sure you write a blog.

Those three things are usually the first words to myself when I wake up. These tasks are the first things I do every morning as my morning practice. I don’t usually miss them.

That wasn’t always the case. I used to put them on a list and promise myself I would get to them throughout the day. I didn’t give them a time of day.

For example, if I try to cook breakfast, talk to my roommate, or take a shower before I get started, my chances of success go way down. Not to mention if I pushed them back even further, success probability would tumble even more.

Look for constraints to add when you need to add more weight, they help your focus.

I made  a bright-line rule, before I do anything else I can’t leave my room until these tasks are done. My completion rate went up. Forcing the task to being the first thing I do when I woke up made it hard to avoid. With no excuses, the work gets done, and I get to finish every day knowing I’ve completed something, no matter what else happened.

Morning People

Mornings can be fun.

Or mornings can be messy.

I usually find myself in the second category. I am an evening person, and of course – my stand up exacerbates that. Stuck in the matrix of the lights of the city streets.

That is a shame though – because mornings are the part of the day that can be most regulated with a little will power.

Think about it – You have a schedule, whether it is written down or remembered, with things stuck in places where they cannot be moved.

In the morning, no one schedules anything. You are usually left alone. You have a chance to work.

So it is something I want to work on – lets see where my progress goes.
