People & Projects

You need both!

The saying “your network is your net worth” feels trite to me.

Even now, when I type it, it gives me the feeling that “networker” at an event, handing out business cards. You know how they work, going from person to person asking the “right” questions to see if someone is worth the trouble of “linking” with.

I hate that guy (or girl).

Same thing with the idea that you just need to ship projects.

The saying “if you build it, they will come” has sunk teams for decades now.

They saying is awful because it leads to the genius in his bedroom stereotype, who has all the know-how in the world but needs an NDA to discuss it. Trust me, even if you signed it, it isn’t worth the ink that you used the NDA on.

What is the alternative?

Taking the people and projects approach. Making sure you connect with people and build your tribe through outreach, meetups, and coffee. Speaking with them about the work you are doing (and you are doing a project!) while having a genuine interest in where they are, regardless of “status.”

Because the secret is, both of those caricatures are right; they just go about it all wrong.

Move On

Old projects die.

Let them.

They are just fertilizing your brain for something new.

Holding on to the past for your ego leads to a bitter present and a shallow future.

Just Get Up And Move

Switch it up

Soon after the high of getting a project off the ground goes away, you land in something I like to call “the boring.

There, in “the boring” it’s easy to get lost.

I look at being lost as an opportunity to take a look at your environment.

Where you work is often as important as what you work you do. If you are working in the same place, around the same environment everyday there is a chance that it factors in to that feeling of “lossness,” or the feeling that nothing really matters.

You are susceptible when you get to the point of your project where the quick victories don’t happen. In the beginning of making a blog, its easy to get signed up, but as you finish the early work and get to writing, getting from 5 readers to 50 can take some time.

So, what I’m saying is take a chance.  Grab everything and move to Austin.

I’m kidding. But seriously, take the work you are doing and put it in a different place.

  • Take your laptop to that coffee shop down the street
  • Go to a park while you think
  • Find the local library

Some places work better than your desk and some work worse, but a new place gives you an opportunity to give your work new energy and make “the boring” less sucky.

Take a Break! April 9th I am doing it

I haven’t yet taken a break

After quitting my job, I had this idea that I would take a few weeks, do some travel, and let my mind relax. It was one of the fantasies I had, going out in the world with friends, avoiding the New York winter, and having a good time. It was a beautiful dream.

I didn’t do any thing like that.

I went in the opposite direction. I started working harder. I started hunting for projects right away. I connected and reconnected, put forth a few ideas, and gave my white board some serious pen love. It paid off. At my last count, I am working on seven different projects with seven different teams.

There is a part of me that doesn’t want to give up the work. There is a voice in my head that gets scared, and says if I calm down, I won’t matter, and if I don’t matter, I don’t exist.

Luckily for me most of the projects I am working on are on a short-term basis or long-term enough for me to take a break.  I am circling the date of April 9th, my birthday, as the time to take a week or two off and give myself a vacation.

Making this public so I can’t back out. Hold me to it.

Mondays Stink Because of Me

Mondays stink because of me.

There is nothing wrong with Monday as it is, there is nothing about the day of Monday that makes me sad, its just another day on the calendar, and the start of a work week.

How can I make Monday’s better?

That’s the theme this week.
