Hmm… Why Doesn’t Free Money Work?

The paradox of free money

The paradox of free money is if you ask people they want to have it, yet if you try to give it, they will reject it.

Don’t believe me?

Ask a stranger in a lab if they want ten dollars for free, and they will say yes every time.  Yet, I don’t know of a better way to save money than trying to give it away to strangers on the street.

If you don’t believe me, go out and try to give people five dollars. No agenda, no sign, walk up and try to provide them with the money, and report back.

What you’ll probably find is people think there is some ulterior motive, and run away from you like the plague.

Why is that?

People love the idea of free money, but when faced with it, they think back to any “free lunch” they had in life. “Free lunch” never ends well.

So they reject and fast.

I say this to say when you ask someone, and the response is “free money” (lower prices, discounts, etc.) without understanding the tradeoffs, they are still in “idea of” land.

More work is required.
