Season 1 of the Video Blog is Complete :-)

Some things must come to an end

I have decided to stop shooting my Life As Usual video blog temporarily. For those unaware, each week, for the last 4 months, I have shot, edited, and distributed the video blog. Each Sunday I shot and posted the video on YouTube. Then on Thursday, I posted the video on the blog with some of the things I learned.

Its time to re-consolidate and try a few different experiments with my YouTube videos, and I want to spend my time towards trying different things with the videos I shot. I don’t think I can do two of those things at once while working through altMBA. What better time than now to take a break and deal with what I learned.

I am glad I shot the videos, because it required working with my fear of producing something I knew nothing about.

I am a rookie

The reason I decided to try video is because it scared me and I had zero experience.  I saw that I could do it for cheap (~$20). All I needed was a tripod to stabilize my shot and a holder for my cell phone.  The rest of the work relied on time and dealing with my emotional pain points:

When I started this,  I was very scared of putting myself on video, so I got the courage and put myself in the arena, killing a lot of bad self talk.

I learned by doing, and each week the videos got better. I felt more comfortable shooting them. I learned a bunch of tools and tricks. The community around me helped me get better shots, write better material, and focus my message.

So whats next?

More experiments! I will learn more about the editing process. I plan on cutting up the videos I already have and distributing them into posts. I also plan on getting better at promoting the clips I have through social media. I am doing this top prepare for a “second season” of these videos, with better content and production. I am proud of these videos, but I hope these are the worst videos I ever shoot.

If you haven’t seen them, I’ve provided a list below. Season 1 of the Life As Usual video blog.

Life As Usual Video Blog #16 – Minimalism

Every week I do a video blog (or VLOG).

This week I talked about minimalism.

When I started this,  I was very scared of putting myself on video, so I got the courage and put myself in the arena, killing a lot of bad self talk. This gives me the chance to work on my communication skills, start a new medium, and experiment!

Once a week, after I have thought about them, I will give them a day here on the blog.

These aren’t just promotion posts (although they are, please watch and share :-) ) I want to take the time to break them down and try to clarify what I want to communicate and the tactical things I learned through doing.

If you enjoyed the video, and if you want to get on the ride, please, subscribe to my YouTube channel, and join my Facebook page where I post them every Sunday night.

What I Wanted To Communicate About Minimalism

Working with less allows you to work with more. Minimalism is the art of “minimizing” or eliminating the things that aren’t necessary to focus on the things that are.

  • Less to keep up and clean up – When you try minimalism, you have less to clean up.How much easier is it to clean your place when you have to pick up five things instead of fifty.
  • More energy to appreciate when you have – It’s easier to appreciate the stuff you have when you have less of it. If your shirt tears up, then its easier to see you need to fix it.
  • Your place (brain) works better and feels better  when you have less to support then you have more mental processing power to work with.

What I Learned Doing This Video

  • Standardizing the intro and outro made this quicker.
  • Light is important – I need to check out a tutorial on it.

Life As Usual Video Blog #11 – Questions

Every week I do a video blog (of VLOG). This week I talked about Questions.

When I started this,  I was very scared of putting myself on video, so I got the courage and put myself in the arena, killing a lot of bad self talk. This gives me the chance to work on my communication skills, start a new medium, and experiment!

Once a week, after I have thought about them, I will give them a day here on the blog.

What I Wanted To Communicate About Questions

Questions are the backbone of gaining knowledge. There is a real art to being a better questioner and being better at answering them. There is an art to both, and this week I give a few tips into the world.

  • Asking
    • Do the homework – Asking is a privilege, show that you understand that by doing the work before showing up. Try to get well read, at least try to get enough in so you understand what is happening, and get to ask a relevant question.
    • Know how to ask – Environment matters. Don’t embarrass people, and don’t turn meetings that serve a certain purpose into your personal pulpit.
    • Drop the ego – This isn’t a chance to show how smart you are. It’s about the knowledge, nothing more nothing less.
  • Receiving
    • Take a breath – This allows you to hear, and as a bonus, stops you from trying to think around and about your answer.
    • Body language matters – When someone asks you a question, they are not just trying to hear you, they are watching your every move. So, how you respond matters.
    • Drop the ego – This isn’t the opportunity to berate someone.
  • Bonus – Asking questions when you are leading leads to growth opportunities.

What I Learned Doing This Video

  • Back straight – Body language matters. If I slump then I don’t feel as confident delivering the material.,
  • My work on Um’s and Ah’s Matter
  • I lost the first cut of this video because of space restraints. I need to understand my equipment better.

Life As Usual Video Blog #10 – Reread Lists

Every week I do a video blog (of VLOG). This week I talked about my reread list.

When I started this,  I was very scared of putting myself on video, so I got the courage and put myself in the arena, killing a lot of bad self talk. This gives me the chance to work on my communication skills, start a new medium, and experiment!

Once a week, after I have thought about them, I will give them a day here on the blog.

What I Wanted To Communicate About Reread Lists

It isn’t enough to read books. You have to spend your time reading the books that matter. A Reread list ensures your library is full of books that do.

  • Developing The List – Books come out often. So often, we can’t keep up. I think we all should read. With that said, its best to spend your time reading the books that have the most impact. To get there, it’s a war of attrition. Be ruthless and give away the books that give you what you need.
  • Gifts – If you have a list, now you have books that give others value. Instead of giving random books, now you can gift books that you know help people.

What I Learned Doing This Video

  • I hunch a lot, I need to straighten up while I do this.
  • A waiter pad helped cut this down. It is now in the tool box for preproduction.
  • I found out my tripod got higher (every week I learn something new about equipment). Makes everything look better when the camera is higher than me.

Life As Usual Video Blog #5 – Preparation

Every week I do a video blog (of VLOG). This week I talked about preparation.

Once a week, after I have thought about them, I will give them a day here on the blog.

What I Wanted To Communicate About Preparation

Preparation has a ton of benefits. It isn’t something I do well in my life, and I am looking to improve what I can do.

I hit on three bullet points

  • Preparing helps cut fear of doing work. You feel better and stay present after preparation.
  • Preparing is a force multiplier, you get better when you take time to prepare, in some ways one minute spent preparing gives you 10 extra minutes of action.
  • Don’t get locked in the act of preparation. The map is not the territory, use it as an aid. The objective is the task, not the plan.

What I Learned Doing This Video

  • No auto focus is better.
  • 15 minutes of tape ended up being under 5 minutes.
  • I learned how to use my tripod (sounds silly, but before I just stabilized it on a pile of boxes.)
