I had an insightful conversation a few years ago with a mentor of mine. We were both at a conference and when I spoke to people I told them EVERYTHING.
What I did, who I knew, what brought me here l, blah blah blah.
She stopped me and asked me a question, one that I keep with me everywhere I go ( and when I’m at my best, implement)
“What are the three biggest personality points that means something to the average person here? Take 5 minutes in a quiet place and think about them, and practice saying it, I you lead with that and just listen, you’ll have a much better conversation.”
She was right.
Mind blown.
I always thought that excellent conversation happened organically, and it does. Our minds are incredible when they are in a position to freestyle.
When you need to have pointed conversation, especially in a pressured situation, it is much better to practice your introduction. You may think of it as phony. However, it is an entry into that authentic conversation that drives relationships.
Think about the package you are delivering, then let your personality take it from there.
